The Types Of Network

What do you know about networks? If somebody asks you about this, how would you define a network briefly? The answer in simple terms, a set of computers which are connected together with aim of sharing resources, exchanging files and also enabling communication. Generally, the networks are linked through cables, radio waves, telephone lines etc. There are numerous definitions given by a lot of people around the world. But, the idea is very easy to understand.

Nevertheless, under the topic of networks, the most significant part is the types of networks. It is not a surprise that there are more than 10 networks that we usually discuss almost every day. Let’s take some of those to elaborate.

The two very common types network are,

 LAN (Local Area Network)

This is relatively a small area. It is usually limited to areas such a school, building etc. In other words, a LAN refers to a computer network which is set up in one particular location. For instance, an ethernet media converter can also be connected to a LAN.

 WAN (Wide Area Network)

This could be known as the next step of LAN. Because it connects different geographical areas. For example, the schools in Sydney, can be connected via WAN. It will enable effective communication, exchange of data among those schools. Similarly, assume that you have to connect the manufacturing plants of your organization to one place. With the use of effective industrial media converter fiber optic, you will be able to link all the plants as WAN.

Except those two types, there are few others as well.

 CAN (Campus Area Network)

These are commonly seen in places like Universities and schools. In general, a CAN is used in buildings which are fairly close to each other.

 PAN (Personal Area Network)

This is the smallest and the most basic type of network. Some examples would be, wireless modems, a telephone line, two computers etc.

 EPN (Enterprise private network)

As its name implies, an EPN is owned by large scale businesses in anticipation of sharing resources and exchanging information among different branches of the business.

However, those are the types of networks we talk about very often. It is not limited to these, but this is more than enough to really understand what is a network and its types. You can always choose what you want depending on your requirement. Either for domestic use or organizational use, different characteristics and features will help you to take the decision. Hence, study further about this and try to choose the most suitable network to fulfil your purpose.
